How did you learn to cook?

“I started with Hilton catering when I was in high school, at the age of 16.
I’ve worked with many hotels and restaurants. In college I was a Philosophy Major, when I returned home and begin working at various jobs, I realized I wanted to be a Chef. And so I joined the Coast Guard. I’ve been the Chef on the Healy for 3 1/2 years.”

Do you like your job?

“I love my job! I get to cook for some of the most important people in the world. They are the people who are saving the planet. When you’re working 14-16 hour days, it’s important to love what you’re doing. I like making people happy. When you love those that you’re working with they will love you back!”

What are some of the favorite foods that the Scientists and Crew like to you to cook?

“They like their comfort foods, things like burgers, pizza and chocolate chip cookies!”

Jan currently teaches Kindergarten and First grade in Palo Alto, CA. She looks forward to a new challenge in the Fall of both Second and Fourth grades. Her main focus on the Healy will be to bring real world Science to elementary school students through text, pictures, videos and live streaming.
