Graphite I meant to draw some walruses in preparation for the first of my larger food chain pieces today, but I just couldn’t tear myself away from the ice. I have a spot where I can sit in the bridge with a perfect view of the ice and it’s just so nice to sit there and erase ice floes while keeping an eye out for polar bears. This piece is also drawn with an eraser on a piece of paper toned all over with graphite. 2 Responses Luisa May 28, 2014 Hi Chelsea! I love this drawing. I think it’s super cool that the base of the drawing is in graphite, and that you erased to draw out the ice floes. Where did you draw this? Its a really beautiful location. I noticed you said you keep an eye out for polar bears, and I was wondering if you saw any other wildlife in this location. Do you ever see fish or birds here? If there are polar bears, there must be some kind of food chain. Reply Chelsea Clarke May 31, 2014 Hi Luisa! Thanks for the compliment! I’m actually not sure exactly where I drew this. Out in the middle of the sea ice it gets hard to tell where you are except by latitude and longitude, so all I can tell you is that it’s in the Chukchi Sea somewhere. There are a lot of birds here, mostly kittiwakes and other gulls, and we’ve also seen snow buntings. I haven’t actually seen any fish, but I’m sure they are there under the ice, we just can’t see them. There are also a lot of seals, which eat the fish and are the main food for the polar bears.
